Description
A late Victorian silver inkstand of rounded rectangular form with beaded rim and raised on four splay feet, with a pair of silver mounted cut glass ink bottles flanking a central taper stick and a pen recess to either side, one containing an associated silver handled and tortoiseshell paperknife. Hallmarked Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall, Sheffield 1895, paperknife hallmarked Crisford & Norris Ltd., Birmingham 1907. Length of tray measures 9 inches (23 cm), weight excluding glass bottles and paperknife 15.75 ozt (490 grams).
Condition
The inkstand displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. Some minor dints and bumps and heavier marks to some areas. Also some dints and bumps to the silver mounts on the bottles. Both hinges are a little loose and one of the lids has a small hole in the metal and does not close properly. Small edge nicks and chips to the glass. The hallmarks appear rubbed in places but are still legible. Matching part hallmarks to removable parts.
