Leon Golub (American, 1922-2004)
Born in Chicago, painter Leon Golub studied at the University of Chicago and the Art Institute of Chicago. Inspired by Greek and Roman sculpture, athletic photography, and homoerotic pornography, Golub is best known for his symbolic paintings of the human body. In the 1980s, Golub shifted his focus toward depicting terrorism and its varying manifestations. His later work consisted of an illusionistic style centered on themes of loss, death and separation. Golub’s work has been exhibited internationally, including shows at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
