Rare 17th cent. Baroque Spanish Vargueno

Item Details

Description

Measures approx 44.5" x 16.25" x 58.5" Walnut, bronze and bone construction. A double-hasped lock, the escutcheon is cut into the plate. The pierced mountings on the exterior are backed by faded burgundy velvet. The two upper plates boast teardrop pulls. A metal pierced plate set upon each side and burgundy velvet is mounted, and each has a bail-type handle. Drop front opens to reveal twelve drawers and one door which swings open to reveal tree more drawers (the secret compartment lies behind the middle drawer). Each is decorated with relief carved colonnades which separate the bone/vory faced hand painted drawer and door panels. Gold coats the moldings, entablature drawers and doors, some of which are decorated with fluting and twisted bone colonettes and knob finials. The geometric bone inlay adorn the drawers in diamond and rectangle plaques throughout. The central door has an arched top with side twist columns. The lower section consists of two upper drawers and two lower doors. Four outer swirls encased in square moldings centered by a quatrefoil the rounded corners of which are interspersed by centralized squares. Each is framed by a suspended relief-carved blocks. The relief carving is painted in alternate colors of white and gold. Examples like this can be seen in Hispanic Furniture by Grace Hardendorff Burr pages 151-153, The Hispanic Society Museum NYC and Hearst Castle
