The AEAA is very pleased to present this handsome & Rare Mitchell & Woodbury Co., R.S. Germany, Reinhold Schlegelmilch, Tillowitz Factory and hand painted chocolate pot from the 1920s. Our octagonal lobed pot carries the proper R.H. Capers identified RS 4.10 B 4 RS Germany stamp, PLUS, the RARE Mitchell & Woodbury RS 3.3(G) 5 decorating & import signature. which validates the potting date. Our fine chocolate sits 6.5 x 10 inches tall, weighing 1#, and is in wonderful condition. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. The history of RS Prussia Porcelain dates back to 1869, with the opening of the Reinhold Schlegelmilch Porcelain factory in Tillowitz, Silesia, Germany, as well as a decorating studio in Suhl, Thuringia, Germany. The RS Prussia Wreath & Star mark was derived from its founder, Reinhold Schlegelmilch, and was later used by his sons Erhard and Arnold, after his passing. These two Reinhold facilities produced the finest and most innovative hard paste Art Nouveau porcelain in the world from the end of the Victorian era ca. 1892 up until the beginning of World War I. During the early part of this period, most of the pieces exported to the United States sported the ca. 1895 RS Steeple marks that were augmented in 1903 / 1904 by the red and green RS Prussia aforementioned Wreath & Star signature. However, history records that this mark only proliferated from the early 1900s to ca. 1914. In 1910, Reinhold’s Tillowitz factory reputedly changed exclusively to the Green RS Germany Wreath & Star, with Suhl maintaining the Red & green stamp to 1914, and after 1918, Tillowitz added other colors as well. The Tillowitz factory survived beyond 1915, the point at which the Suhl factory was forced to close forever as a causality of WW I. Both RS Steeple & RS Prussia marks paralleled the RS Germany Wreath & Star, and are recorded until 1914 / 1915. The RS Germany mark from the Tillowitz factory was seen until its last documented use in 1938, BUT , there are some reputable scholars that believe the RS Germany mark was used until approximately 1944. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. This renowned retailer was associated with various potters of high end German and Silesian porcelain items. While Mitchell, Woodbury & Co. itself was located on Pearl Street in Boston, Charles Henry Woodbury lived in Allston. Probably the best long-time seller were items made by the Lamberton Works which had started off 1869 in the Port of Lamberton in Trenton, New Jersey and had been founded by George Comfort, Thomas Bell and Jonathan Stewart. In the end the company was bought by the Maddock Pottery Company in 1892 and remained the Thomas Maddock & Sons Lamberton Works until it branched off in 1924 and was renamed to Scammell China Company. But, many of the foreign sets sold via Mitchell, Woodbury & Co. actually came out of Germany, especially from the Upper Silesia region. Including quality sets from the R.S. Germany, Tillowitz factory.
