Item Details
Description
The AEAA is very pleased to present this brilliant 1930 English Burleighware octagonal bowl from the venerable Burgess & Leigh Co. at the Middleport Pottery, Burslem, England. Our stunning bowl features a deep & rich multi fruit pattern, and was very likely decorated by George Adams. Our pattern will be unique, as with lots of aerographed wares, the freehand nature of decoration makes for divergent patterns within the overall theme. patterns quite unique. This English treasure carries the proper 1930-1932 dual banner Burgess & Leigh over Burslem globe, used exclusively from 1906 to 1912. The Burleigh Ware line was first offered in 1930, with Luster Ware at the forefront, ergo, the Burleigh Ware over our early globe. Our great serving bowl sits 9.75 x 3 inches deep, weighing 1# 10 oz., and is in excellent condition, with a couple of small rough edge spots - mentioned only for accuracy. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. William Leigh was in partnership for more than thirty years with Frederick Rathbone Burgess, a descendant of the T. Rathbone family (Newfield Pottery), who were pottery manufacturers in Tunstall. The expansion of the business soon necessitated a move from its first home, the Central Pottery (1862-1870), Burslem to the Hill Pottery (1870 to 1889) previously occupied by Samuel Alcock & Co. Burgess & Leigh acquired a number of the Alcock best known shapes and patterns, and the business still continued to expand, making Hill Pottery itself obsolescent. An entirely new factory was built at Middleport, outside Burslem in 1889, becoming the long term home for Burgess & Leigh.
