Limoges is one of the most ancient cities having been founded as Augustoritum by the Romans, around 10 BC, but searching for a more secure site, the modern Puy Saint-Étienne, with the City and Castle, unified in 1792 to form a single city, Limoges. In 1771, French porcelain was changed forever, as an ultra fine quality Kaolin was discovered at Saint Yrieix la Perche, near Limoges, and a further revelation occurred with the discovery of Limoges underground deposits providing special minerals that became metallic oxides for new brilliant enamels. In 1771, soft paste manufacturing was converted into the first hard paste porcelain made in the Limoges region. The first true factory established about 1774 became a subsidiary of the royal factory in Sevres in 1784. Following the French Revolution, Royal restrictions were removed, and by the early 1800s, Limoges was producing for European consumption, the finest, purest white porcelain in the world. By the 1840s, almost 50 independent factories were operating in Limoges, prompting some of the West’s finest artists to take residence to practice their art on Limoges porcelain. In 1847 David Haviland opened a decorating studio in Limoges, France. Although it was a decade before he began producing porcelain of his own, the effect was to alter the U.S. high end china market for all time.
