Description
Bronze sculpture, "Ludwig", after a work by Elizabet Ney (Munster, Germany, Austin, Texas, 1833-1907), unsigned, marked 3/12 at one end, 5.25"h, 4.5"w, 9.75"d, 8.5lbs *Provenance: The estate of Marcia Bland Brown, internationally acclaimed Interior Architect and Interior Designer, recognized and published in books including Casa San Miguel: Inspired Design and Decoration, Casa Bohemia: The Spanish- Style House and Mexican Tiles: Color, Style, Design, as well as magazines including Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Veranda, Departures and Texas Monthly* *Note: Elizabet Ney's dog, that she possessed later in life, was Ludwig, a Bullmastiff. The dog was reportedly named after the Bavarian King Ludwig II (1845-1886) who was the subject Ney's marble sculpture in 1868. Although speculative, this casting was likely made in the1970's by Mr. Raymond Brown, owner of the prestigious Country Store Gallery, in Austin, Texas. On January 25, 1976, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported that Baylor University had received a gift from Mr. Brown, a bronze sculpture of Ney's 'Ludwig". The Seguin Gazette, issue of January 23, 1983, states that Southwest Texas University received a gift of a Ney's 'Ludwig' bronze from Raymond Brown. The Elizabet Ney Museum, Austin, Texas, is in possession of a similar 'Ludwig' bronze marked 8/12. The whereabouts of the original Ney 'Ludwig' sculpture, in bronze or other media, is currently unknown. Start Price: $2000.00
