Description
48. Dual System Smoker’s Cane-London Hallmarks 1885-Silver handle modeled in a stylized grouse head with longer beak flanked by a pair of glass eyes and a well figured plumage. The neck is struck with clear London hallmarks 1885 beside a “J.K” maker’s mark for Julius Klinkhardt, Stick & umbrella manufacturer, mounter in gold & silver, Chandos Street, London WC, registered Apr 1885, bankrupt 1915. The neck of the bird continues in a cylindrical and plain silver collar engraved with “CG” initials on one side and, what seems to be, a family crest on the other and signed “SANGSTER”. Ebony shaft and a horn ferrule. So-far, so-good, however, what makes this cane very special, is that the cap of the grouse head is hinged and flips open to show a container which can be used either a cigarette holder or a Vesta match box or even both on top of one another. In the latter case, the matches can ignite by striking against the plumage. Very rare in the cane repertoire, this dual purpose cane was obviously used and shows the amount of wear to increase its appeal and not diminish its value.- H. 3 ½” x 4”, O.L. 35 ¼”-$1,200-$1,800
