Four-armed candelabra with vegetal engravings and ancient Hebrew letters
Dimensions: 23.7 x 31 x 12.7 cm
Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 560 EUR
This four-flame candelabra is a very intriguing piece. Upon the box-shaped base are assembled four candelabra arms connected with each other by a long bar. The outside arms are lower and frame a middle, higher pair of candelabra arms. The upper parts of the shafts are decorated on the obverse and the reverse with engraved vegetal ornaments. The light holders are conical. The ancient Hebrew letters ‘????‘ [Masada] are engraved on the obverse of the base as well as the date ‘14.01.1940’. This inscription can be interpreted in several ways. Firstly, there was a Kibbuz called Masada from which the candelabra could originate. On the other hand experts think that a Hakhshara-group went to Masada at the inscribed date and the candelabra is thus a souvenir. Lastly there was a school in Darmstadt called Masada and it could be that the candelabra is somehow connected with this.
Furthermore on the underside of the base there can be found an illegible hallmark as well as the purity ‘800’ and further letters and numbers ‘2365 GS 39’ which could be the product numbers.
The piece shows signs of age and wear. The silver is tarnished and stained. Moreover there are a few scratches. One of the fixations of the candelabra arms is missing, but this is not visible from above and everything is still firmly attached. The dimensions are 23.7 x 31 x 12.7 cm.
Hakhshara
Hakhshara-groups were Zionist organizations that brought the youth from Europe to Israel. This happened mainly in the 1920ies and 1930ies. Perhaps one of those groups visited Masada in 1940, either the place Masade with the mesa that played an important role in history, or the Kibbuz of the same name. (nlu)
