After the end of the Biedermeir period in the 1840s, and upon Johann Pohls passing in 1848, Harrach undertook the production of popular forms, barely surviving until 1884, when Bohdan Kadlec, connected to the progressive Prague School of Applied Art, taking over control of operations. Embracing the Secession and Art Nouveau movements, designs were prepared for Harrach by the talented students of the school, and then executed in the factory. From ca. 1880 through 1910, the Harrach hand blown Art Nouveau designs included some of the most innovative and whimsical of any seen from Bohemia. Magnificent cased & Vaseline brides bowls, were joined with a myriad of glass formulas, shapes, and are still the only verified manufactures of applied lizards & snakes on the exterior of vessels! At the end of Kadlecs tenure in 1900, the company was producing over 1,500,000 pounds of finished glass! The turn of the century Art Nouveau glass was strongly influenced by Alfons Muncha & Julius Jelinek, and innovation continued until the disastrous advent of WW I. Harrach was destined to survive however, outlasting WW I, the 1920s depression, the German occupation & WW II. Today both the company and region are again in the forefront of glass production in Europe. xxxxxxxxxxx. Pairpoint Manufacturing Company started in 1880 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. William L. Libbey established Pairpoint Manufacturing Company in New Bedford to make silver-plated metal mounts for Mt. Washington. It soon joined with the glassworks nearby and made glass, silver-plated pieces, and lamps. Reverse-painted glass shades and molded shades known as "puffies" were part of the production until the 1930s. The company reorganized and changed its name several times but was in business as the Pairpoint Corporation until closing in 1958is still working today. From the mid 1890s to the mid 1910s, Pairpoint Quadruple silver plate items were considered the equal of even the great James Tufts.
