Item Details
Description
The following treasure is from the living estate of Ailene & Buddy Ford; noted dealers and lifelong collectors of exceptional antique & vintage heirlooms. The Ford estate presents highly valuable items from a diverse group of genres, 95% + in excellent condition. This exquisite estate has something for every eclectic collector! xxxxxxxxxxx. The AEAA is very pleased to present this stunning pair of Bohemian portrait plates, including a pre 1918 Victoria Schmidt mythological siren 8.75 inch example, and a marvelous 9.25 inch pre 1913 Bawo & Dotter / Vienna Bindenschild, classical ladies portrait plate (from an original portrait by Angelica Kauffmann). Both are in great condition, with spectacular definition & colors and have a total weight of 2#. xxxxxxxxxxx. *** For collectors: Victoria Schmidt marks; THE SMALL DOUBLE OVAL EAGLE WITH THE SPELLING CARLSBAD OVER AUSTRIA, was used from 1902-1918. Bawo & Dotter of Limoges fame, also had a major decorating studio in Bohemia. White Wares were accepted from only quality German potters for hand painting and export to the United States. A separate stamp from the Elite works of France was used to denote the Bawo & Dotter Bohemian line. The Austria, Imperial Crown China stamp, was a decorators and importers mark for Bawo and Dotter exclusively, and used for wares that had been finished in its own porcelain decorating studio in Fischern, Bohemia (now Rybare Czechia). Their main corporate office was in New York City, and the years of operation were ca. 1883 to 1914. SPECIAL MARKS BELOW: #1 imperial Crown China Austria, sometimes coupled with a wistful Royal Vienna Bindenschild (behive) mark. #2 The scarce combined 1900-1913, Imperial & Double Shield + Crown Vienna stamp, inherited from P.H. Leonard in 1899. According to James Henderson, two other New York importers used the double shield and crown mark in the early 1900s including, Charles L Dwenger, and Paul A Straub & Co. History records PH Leonard was the first to use the mark from 1890 until 1898, and subsequently Bawo & Dotter after Leonard’s demise until 1913, when the B & D factory also closed. Charles L Dwenger used it until approximately 1917, and then as best as we can ascertain, Paul A Straub had stewardship from ca. 1918 into the 1920s.
