The documented use of salt cellars dates back to Classical Rome, but the Middle Ages saw these functional pieces transform into ornamented works of art. Placed at the head table, this large receptacle was a sign of status and prosperity, prominently displayed. It was usually made of silver and often decorated in motifs of the sea. The social status of guests could be measured by their positions relative to the master's large salt cellar: high-ranking guests sat above the salt, while those of lesser importance sat below the salt.

This specific cellar is comprised of silver gilt a technique today commonly referred to as vermeil and it consist of five elements that when fully assembled appear to emulate a domed edifice. Recovered on January 31, 1985, this silver gilt salt cellar has been privately-owned since 1986 and stands approximately 12 tall. Seeing as salt was a prized commodity in the 17th century, housing it in a vessel as ornate as this surely implies that this piece was destined for the dining table of a prominent family.

After nearly 400 years under the sea, this salt cellar did undergo preservation efforts after having been recovered by Mel Fisher and his team. The elaborate and textured scrollwork throughout remains in fine condition, however there are a few areas where chipping occurred over time. Please note: three of the feet belonging to the base were are detached, but they were located during the salvage process and are included with the salt cellar.
