Description
Belgian School, 19th century. "The Governess", oil on canvas, unsigned. Genre painting depicting three women sitting in a decorated library among books and maps of the world, the governess sitting in red velvet chair at center foreground and dressed in blue gown reading aloud a novel facing the two elegantly dressed females, the two girls at right resting on one another as story is read to them as the light from open window illuminates figures faces. Christie's label on verso of frame. Framed approximately 38" x 32.875". Unframed approximately 27.2" x 21.25". Provenance: Acquired at Christie's London, South Kensington, "Christie's Interiors" sale #5368, October 28, 2008, Lot 452.
