He was Nihonga artist, a painter and printmaker who diverse styles to reflect wide cultural influences from Japan. Most known for his Japanese paintings and folding screens also decorated sets of many well-known Hollywood films from the 50s and 60s, and TV shows in the 70s and 80s.
