Description
Asia, Japan, Yayoi culture, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. During the time of the Yayoi, the Japanese became a rice-based culture and storage jars or tsubo like this example became very important. First developed in the southern island of Kyushu, Yayoi pottery is distinguished by its highly polished red color. Â While the finish in this example has worn away over the ages, the form boasts an elegant silhouette quite characteristic of Yayoi ceramics, with its ample middle that narrows to a small, pedestal-like bottom - a clean, serviceable shape hand-built by the women of the culture using the coil method. Â While the Yayoi vessels reveal influence of the preceding Jomon culture, they stand apart for their fine, smooth clay surfaces, and the Yayoi sometimes applied clay slip over the body to make the vessels less porous. Some scholars have recognized similarities to ancient Korean ceramics, pointing out that the Yayoi style may in fact have originated in Korea. A very rare example of Yayoi ceramics! 8"H (20.25 cm) x 8"W (20.25 cm).
