Item Details
Description
Napoleon III Giltwood Looking Glass, third quarter 19th century, the cove-molded frame decorated with acanthus and laurel leaves and a Greek-key-molded liner, h. 63-1/2", w. 43-1/2". Provenance: Henry Stern Antiques, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Condition
In overall good condition, exhibiting a nice, mostly original gilt surface with very few losses or repairs, and some normal cracks in the gesso. There is only one place on the face of the mirror where gilt loss exposes the underlying gesso, that is a bead/round dot, at a lower corner. The mirror plate is a later addition and is crisp and clear. There is a loss to a considerable section of gesso/molding along the outer edge on one side, against the wall. The lost sections are about 3/8" wide, and run about 2/3 of the height of the mirror.
