Description
Anointed Spanish-Colonial Processional Banner from the 18th century church of San Vicente de Austria in El Salvador. A rare standard once used for leading devout processions through the streets of a burgeoning indigo colony.
This particular banner demonstrates the considerable sophistication of metallurgy and craftsmanship achieved in colonial latin america. There is a similar Guatemalan piece in the San Antonio Museum of Art. Pole insert is inscribed with "Villa-Soil de la de Sn. Vicente de Austria, año de 1750, mefecit." 40 x 40 centimeters.

Good. Tarnished. Chased silver with gilding and Bombé armorial bearings on either side in excellent condition.
