Description
20th century AD. A bronze ceremonial kartika blade with lotus-flower handle, cage of four scrolled bars and conical spike above; the blade S-curved with hole to one edge. 331 grams, 19cm (7 1/2"). From a central London collection formed between 1990-2000. The Kartika is a weapon symbolizing the severance of all material and worldly bonds and is commonly shown being held by Mahakala the Lord of Time, and the Dakinis, a group of Tantric female deities who help the devotee on the path to enlightenment. The top of the Kartika is decorated with a Vajra, or thunderbolt.
