James Hall and Thomas Mckenney (Americans, 19th century), "Encampment of Piekann Indians, near Fort McKenzie on the Muscleshell River," from "History of the Indian Tribes of North America," c. 1841, lithograph with hand-coloring, from an original painting by Karl Bodmer, initialed within plate lower left, image: 11.5"h x 17"w, overall (framed): 19"h x 25"w. Note: Bodner was an acclaimed German artist who toured the American frontier in the 1830s. This print served as a frontispiece for a folio (large) edition of "Indian Tribes" It depicts the June 1833 gathering of three tribes of the Piegan (Blackfeet) Indians. McKenney was the first director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and he provided the biographies. Hall, a journalist, wrote a long general essay on the history of the North American Indian.
