Pre-Columbian, Southeastern Mexico or Guatemala Highlands, Mayan, Classic Period, ca. 300 to 800 CE. A convex-edged knapped/flaked double edged obsidian knife blade created to insert or attach to a handle. Obsidian is a naturally formed volcanic glass that was greatly integrated into the ritualistic and daily life of ancient Mesoamerica. Some scholars theorize that its widespread use may be the reason for Mesoamerica's lack of metallurgy. Items made from this material had both utilitarian and ceremonial use. In many areas, it was available to all households regardless of socio-economic status, and was used in hunting, agriculture, food preparation, and for many other daily activities. Obsidian was worked into a variety of tool forms, including knives, lance and projectile points, prismatic blades and general bifacial tools. Size: 5-3/4" (14.6 cm).
