Description
A four piece English sterling silver flatware place setting by Joseph Rodgers & Sons. Includes fork (6 1/8" / 16cm), knife (7 3/8" / 19cm), spoon (6" / 15cm) and a napkin ring (1 3/4" / 4.5cm). Each piece bears marks of Joseph Rodgers & Sons with star and Maltese cross mark. Sheffield town marks, Britannia silver purity marks with 1920 date marks. No apparent monograms or removals. Includes original fitted presentation box. Total silver weight approx. 4.67ozt / 145.4grams. Total weight with box 378 grams. A famous firm of cutlers and silversmiths founded in Sheffield in 1682. It was converted under the style of Joseph Rodgers & Sons Ltd in 1871. The factory was at 6 Norfolk Street, Sheffield and a showroom at 60 Holborn Viaduct, London. New large works were opened in 1899 at River Lane, Sheffield. Joseph Rodgers is perhaps rivaled only by George Wostenholm in terms of its importance to Sheffield cutlery and its fame around the world.
