Samuel Bak (b. 1933)

After surviving a concentration camp during World War Two as the son of Jewish parents, Samuel Bak was finally able to study at the Blocherer School in Munich from 1946-48. After the completion of his studies he immigrated to Israel, where he was admitted to Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem four years later. In 1956, he attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris for three years. He then moved to Rome together with his wife and three daughters. Bak also created stage sets for theatres (Israel and Volksbühne Berlin e.g.). He returned to Israel in 1966, where he set up his own studio in Savyon near Tel Aviv. Bak went to study in New York in 1973, where he set up a second studio. Small bronzes are part of his creative output since the 1980s. Bak tries to process his sorrows from the Second World War in his art. Works of his are held by the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Jewish Museum in New York and the Albrecht-Dürer-Haus-Foundation in Nürnberg for example. (tm)
