Description
sketchbook, containing 89 xerox sheets, signed and inscribed in blue felt tip pen 'Ok - dear roy - suzanne - thank you for calling and do verify today' on sheet 1, signed again with further inscriptions and dated 'May 27, 1976' in blue felt tip pen on sheet 89, signed and dedicated in red felt tip pen on the cover, each sheet 296 x 210 mm (11 1/2 x 8 1/4 in.) Provenance: Roy Colmer, New York (to whom given by the artist). Private Collection, USA (acquired from the estate of the above). We are grateful to Nicole Krapat from the Hanne Darboven Stiftung, Hamburg, for her assistance in the cataloguing of this lot, and for confirming the work's authenticity. Born in London in 1935, Roy Colmer studied art at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg, Germany. In 1966, he moved to New York where he worked as a painter and a filmmaker. It was not until the early 1970s that Colmer picked up a camera to begin his best known work: The doors of New York , a series of 3,000 photographs cataloguing the doorways of Manhattan. The entire collection is now housed at the New York Public Library. For her part, Darboven had also attended the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg at the same time as Colmer. Clearly the two had become friends, as they both moved to New York in 1966 to pursue careers as conceptual artists. From 1973 she was represented by the Leo Castelli Gallery, her second solo exhibition taking place in 1976, the year of the current work. Entitled For Jean-Paul Sartre, this is considered to be a pivotal exhibition in her career as it marks her introduction of lenghty passges of prose and poetry. The current work has daily entries from 1st January to 30th April 1976, in each entry she writes out the date of the day according to a numeroligical system of her own device. The entry for 13.4.76 includes a 12 page quote from Georg Christoph Lichtenberg's 'Göttingischer Taschenkalender' - an eighteenth century pocket book with scientific and religious remarks for each day. For the entry of 15.4.76, she quotes another lenghty passage from the same handbook entitled 'Ein Traum' (A Dream). The Jean-Paul Sartre exhibition opened on 1st May, the day after this jounal concludes. IMPORTANT: This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
