McDonald, having dark grey matte glaze, marks include impressed Rookwood flame logo with Roman numeral "XXI" for date 1921, shape #2564, wheel cut X to indicate second quality, signed on back with artist's mold monogram, approximate height 5 5/8", and castle gate, having rust matte glaze, marks include impressed Rookwood flame logo with Roman numeral "XXX" for date 1930, shape #6154, process mark, esoteric fan shaped mark, oval paper label adhered to underside with the handwritten number 49 on it, no apparent artist's signature, approximate height 5 7/8".

Panther bookend has professional restorations to panther and both ends of the book form plinth, also has glaze chip on top edge of book measuring approximately 1/16" in length and on panther's right ear; the castle has restorations to both
