**A NORTH-WEST EUROPEAN WAR AXE, 11TH CENTURYof flat wedge-shaped section formed with a reinforced curved leading edge and swept-upwards, rectangular socket formed with a pointed terminal top and bottom on each face and flattened rear face, on a later wooden haft18 cm; 7 1/8 in head An axe of similar form from Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire dating to circa 1050-1100 is preserved in the Burgh Museum, Dumfries, Scotland.
