A fine striped brocaded silk robe à la Française, 1770s, of blue and white striped, figured and rose-sprigged satin, the open robe with 'sack-back', engageants, pleated and ruffled robings edged in silk fly braid, the matching petticoat with ruched furbelows and a stomacher made from the same fabric, bust approx 86cm, 34in (3)

Bodice has been altered at the side seams, 5cm split and darned repair at right underarm, sleeves have been re-set presumably to remove an area of stained or damaged silk, engageants have been re-lined in ivory silk. Blue silk edging lining is replaced but extremely well done. The petticoat has faint staining to the uppermost furbelow centre front and it has been re-lined in ivory silk similar to the engageants, re-lined in blue and white striped cotton generally, peach silk taffeta to the rear seat area, new waistband and the petticoat was shortened at the waistband by approx 2cm. 4cm split along a stripe near front left waist closure. Faint watermark rear left hem 12 x 33cm long on over-dress, another on the right back hem 10 x 10cm, these are not immediately noticeable.
