Description
A sprigged mustard velvet gentleman's suit, late 1760s, comprising coat which buttons to the waist, sleeved waistcoat and breeches of mustard silk with striped velvet bands sprigged with buds; together with a cloth of silver waistcoat edged with silver braid, linen backing and sleeves, with a note stating that it belonged to William Chaffyn-Grove (5) Provenance: Waddon House, Dorset, the home of the Chaffyn-Grove (Troyte Bullock) family since 1226.
Condition
• The coat: bad splits to shoulder/upper arm area, lining is patched at underarms, neck edges and right front closure edge. Main areas of the ivory satin lining are original and good. Coat was let out at the underarms. Satin lining around button closures is beautifully darned.
• Breeches: 2 splits to front left groin area. Calico has been added probably in the late 19th century to the upper waistband to make larger. Slight staining to crotch on fustian lining.
• Matching waistcoat: splits to front left shoulder and right waist, godets of fustian and challis added to underarms to widen but probably 18th century, a few small moth holes
• Silver waistcoat: silver threads have lifted, especially lower waist area, underarms have been enlarged but probably in the 18th century, a few rust spots
