Alessandro Mendini (b. 1931)
After studying architecture at the Politecnico in Milano, Alessandro Mendini evolved to become one of the most prolific representatives of ‘Radical Design’. He was involved in the founding of the group Global Tools in 1973. Shortly after, he became a partner of Ettore Sottsass and Michele De Lucchi at the Studio Alchimia and co-founder of the Domus Academy in Milano in 1982. In 1989, he decided to set up his own studio together with his brother Francesco. Alessandro Mendini was also the editor in chief of different magazines. The concept of the Dutch Groninger Museum is his. Mendini also designed some Swatch watches in the early 1990s. The Amuleto lamp that he designed for Ramun was incorporated into the permanent exhibition of the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. (tm)
