Jacques Adnet (1900-1984)

Jacques Adnet studied at the École National des Arts Décoratifs in Paris before working as an interior architect at the ‘Maitrise’ as a pupil of Maurice Dufrêne. He designed pieces of furniture together with his brother until 1928. In that same year he became the artistic director of the Compagnie des Artistes français. The years 1929/30 mark the beginning of a cubist geometric period in Adnet’s work. In 1932, metal, mirror and glass are to his works. The ‘white epoch’ began in 1933. Adnet was a creator of mainly pieces of furniture, lights, tapestry, ceramic, glass and numerous interior designs of public institutions as well as private commissioners, e.g. the private apartment of the president of the Republic at Palais d'Elyssée, Paris. In addition, he also created theater decorations. He became the president of the Société des Arts Décoratifs in 1947 and the director in 1959. He received several awards such as the Grand Prix d'Architecture et d'Ensembles Mobiliers of the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs of Paris. (tm)
