A large and impressive map of the Empire of Japan, by Mattheus Seuter, Amsterdam, 1720-1740. The title: Empire of Japan in 66 Regions. The land areas fully colored, but title cartouche to Benjamin Dutry. Et al, not colored as usual. A very rare and important map, its fame lies in the fact the Jesuits smuggled a Japanese map out of Japan (punishable at the time by death!) and copied it in Europe. The 'Han', or feudal provinces have the Kan-ji and 'Roman-ji' names, with many of the Castle towns named. Inset of Nagasaki harbor, showing the Dutch 'factories', framed with various Mon. Japan through Japanese eyes, using their peculiar cartography. Image size: 22 7/8 in x 18 1/2 in (58 x 47 cm). The Dutch cartographer Mattheus Seuter was from Augsburg, 1678-1757. VF appearing by margins trimmed somewhat. A rare, very attractive and sought after map!
