The paper bears the Richard de Bas watermark.Note: In the summer of 1964, Picasso created the Fumeurs (Smokers), a series of thirteen sugar-lift aquatints of a young man wearing a sailor’s striped shirt with a cigarette in his mouth. The Fumeurs are a sort of stylized self-portraits: Picasso was a smoker himself and he was often photographed wearing the traditional striped shirt of the French Marines. But the men depicted are much younger that Picasso, who at the time was in his 80’s. Picasso had previously represented himself as a young sailor in a striped shirt in the Blind Minotaur etchings of 1934 from the Suite Vollard. Here, the vigorous youths may reflect how Picasso wishes to appears, rather than a literal portrait.The Fumeurs were executed using the sugar-lift aquatint technique, which Picasso had mastered, and allowed him to create a full range of tones.Literature: 1.
