Item Details
Description
The AEAA is extremely proud to showcase one of the most beautiful hand painted antique Austrian matte gloss finish porcelain ewer pitchers one will ever find. This treasure is most likely by Ernst Wahliss, one of the major players in the Amphora School of Bohemian custom potters (please see the history below). Our example features a unique mushroom style base, with a rolled over tunnel spout, marvelous & brilliant florals, PLUS the exceptional sinuous flying dragon handle. Dragons and nudes had been a hall mark of Alfred stellmacher, and of Reissner, Stellmacher & Kessel. These two styles were lovingly embraced as well by Ernst Wahliss. The hand painted finishing of this jewel so closely reminds us of the work of Alfred Stellmacher / Amphora, AND WITH GOOD REASON. Upon the closing of the Stellmacher factory at the corner of Modlaner & Kulmerstrasse in 1894, Ernst Wahliss became the beneficiary of the classic RST / Amphora technology + many molds after the acquisition of the factory that same year!!! This antique Wahliss / Amphora treasure weighs 1# 4 oz. and measures 5.5 x 5.5 x 7.75 inches tall. xxxxxxxxxxxx. The Ernst Wahliss Company was founded in 1863 at Turn Teplitz, Bohemia, Austria, opening retail stores in London, England and Vienna, Austria where it sold quality decorative hand painted Bohemian porcelain. In 1894, Wahliss bought the Alfred Stellmacher Imperial and Royal Porcelain Factory (founded in 1859), and after Ernst's passing in 1900, sons Hans and Erich, bought the 600 original molds from the former Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Vienna, and continued to manufacture first quality progeny of Vienna porcelain. The porcelain production was virtually suspended in favor of faience after 1910, making this form’s potting in 1910 or earlier. In 1905, Hans and Erich named the company Alexandra Porcelain Works Ernst Wahliss and this factory became well known for its unique designs. Skilled artisans such as Paul Daschel participated in the design function until starting his own factory in 1905 but only surviving until 1910. Alexandra Porcelain Works Ernst Wahliss was reputed to have purchased Dachsel molds, and with the exception of a 1914-1916 interruption for WW I, the factory continued production until 1921, when it was merged into Porcelain Union, United Porcelain Factory AG.
