Description
Central Asia, Northern Afghanistan, Turkmenistan or Uzbekistan, ca. late 3rd to early 2nd millennium BCE. We see examples of these hit the market listed as "in the style of" or with dubious authenticity. This example is absolutely genuine, with nice old provenance and is very, very desirable. Seated person of unknown sex (although most are considered to be female) wearing patterned robe carved in deep grey/black chlorite. Recessed area carved for placement of the head, carved in limestone, pair of stone hands placed on the platform in front. Most excavated examples of this figure type come from sites in Margiana in southern Turkmenistan, a possible center of their production. Size: 2-1/2" (6.3 cm).
Provenance: Ex-private Jabari collection, Boulder, CO, acquired through family descent before 1983.
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
