Item Details
Description
Syria, Tell Brak region, ca. 3500 - 3300 BCE. Marble or alabaster of abstracted flattened form, with incised eyes and curved eyebrows, narrow neck, shoulders sloping to a broad body and flat base. Used for dedication to an all seeing god who watched over the populations of early Mesopotamia. Size: 2"H (5cm) + custom mount.

At the site of Tell Brak on the Habur tributary of the Euphrates River. Thousands of Eye Idols of marble, alabaster, and clay have been excavated at what has come to be known as the Eye Temple. Several other Northern Mesopotamian sites of the late Gawra and Early Uruk period have yielded similar examples.

Compare examples in 'Early Mesopotamia and Iran' by M.E.L. Mallowan, pages 46 to 50.

Provenance: Ex-private English collection. Authenticated by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology,
University of Birmingham, 1970 to 1993.
