Two George Washington Inaugural Brass Buttons. Circular, one "Linked States" pattern ("GW with Linked States border") centers the initials GW surrounded by the motto "Long Live the President" within a border of thirteen chain links containing initials of each of the original colonies, other "Eagle with Star" pattern centers a Federal eagle under a star, D: 1 ¼", mounted together with a black and white photo engraving depicting Washington's inauguration, silk matted with gilt filet and and gilt framed. Verso with note: "Two original Washington Inaugural buttons enclosed the GW with the State loops was dug at Port Tobacco Maryland. The buttons show porosity and wear, not examined out of the mounting. Together With three loose period buttons, two brass, one silver, with various foliate decorations, some porosity and wear. These buttons were contemporary mementoes of Washington's April 30, 1789 inauguration and have become highly collectable.
