Description
Early English made American flintlock long rifle/fowler, probably used in the War of 1812 as it appears to be signed on the lock plate "OHIO REG1 PT US" (other interpretations of the last 4 characters are PI US or PIUS) - (Note - Some of the characters are slightly worn and difficult to decipher but this is our best guess after a close photographic examination - you may have your interpretation and should use your own judgement when bidding - we have added a new better image of the lock plate). Note the Ohio Regiments first appear during the War of 1812, hence our assessment of that time period. Signed "Wilson - London" on barrel with inspectors mark opposite side of lock plate - 45.5" barrel length - Overall length 61" - Also signed within brass shield "Wm. Field / JRL" possibly the owner (though there was a Wm Field arms maker in Birmingham during this time period). Engraved brass trigger guard & butt plate decorated with cannon, arrow, drum, etc. Ornate reticulated floral & swag brass plate applied to left side of stock above trigger guard. Missing piece that holds the flint, and action non working properly - walnut stock is in very good condition. Slight pitting, surface rust and dark brown patina. Overall fair to good condition.
