Wilson was a lighthouse keeper who regularly explored new sculptural ideas. His decoys have massive or delicate bodies, raised wings, rocking heads, turned heads, horse hair crests, and dangling seaweed. Absolutely nothing was off limits. Gus single handedly impacted traditional decoy vocabulary. He was a great innovator. And, he didn't stop there. He also created a wonderful array of folk sculptures, from small song birds to large tigers, all with identifiable Wilson characteristics.
