Description
second, enlarged edition, first edition illustrated thus, one of 800 copies, lithographed throughout, 25 illustrations by Olga Rozanova and Kazimir Malevich, small ownership stamp to first and last ff., ex-libris sticker and stamps on endpapers, hinges reinforced, original pictorial lithographed wrappers by Malevich, rebacked in plain paper with some repairs to wrappers' edges, preserved in plain board drop-back box, [MoMA 79] , 8vo, St Petersburg, Svet, 1914. A wonderful example of the principles of Futurism, combining illustration with the utilisation of the cheapest materials for the most intriguing and startling graphic & typographic effects. This poem about a card game in Hell is reminiscent of a missal, with its Old Church Slavonic lettering and irregularly cut pages. The first edition had lithographs by Goncharova, but this the second with Rozanova and Malevich's illustrations is considered the more desirable of the two. Provenance: from the collection of the renowned Russian painter M.V. Matyushin.
