Item Details
Description
(4.5x2.5") This gray handle, when originally attached to a gray rectangular box of switches mounted below, was used by the crew to control the spacecraft's rotation in either direction around all three axes. These were controls, one mounted alongside each couch, were connected in parallel so that they operate in a redundant fashion without switching. A trigger type, push-to-talk switch is located on the top of the handle. This handle would have been mounted to the right of the center couch, which means it was probably between Aldrin and Collins during the flight of Apollo 11's Command Module and would have been used as a backup to the Commander's control (Neil Armstrong's) by whoever was sitting in that couch for the particular maneuvers being done (Buzz Aldrin or Michael Collins). This handle is display mounted on a walnut desk mount (15x7x5") along with an original Apollo 11 crew patch AND a yellow North American Rockwell "Temporary Parts Removal Tag". The tag has been filled in to read: "Rot Control #1 Handle", Part Number "10022865-101", Serial/Lot Number "1012", Authority "TPS 033, REM #594". It is also marked "Identity of Next Assembly", Model Number "V36-3, Part Number "V36-000002-111", Serial Number "107", Mark for Shipment of "PFT 107", Inspector "9-22-69" and three inspection hand-stamps. The consignor has told us, according to his memory and the fact that this unit was stored in his (post-retirement) "Apollo 11" storage box, that this unit was removed from Apollo 11 after the flight and given to him by NASA personnel to be display mounted for presentation purposes. It was never retrieved and he stored it in his office safe awaiting retrieval while he was at NASA. When he retired he was told to clean out his safe and to throw away anything not currently needed. Instead of throwing this piece away, he decided to keep it as a souvenir of his years at NASA. He subsequently told one of the Apollo 11 astronauts about the piece and asked him if he wanted it. When told no, he put it away again until now. The unit has engraved serial numbers on the bottom corresponding to those on the ID tag. A piece of old gray tape on the handle reads #1 on one side and Apollo 11" on the other. Any way you look at this, it is a major piece of Apollo 11 history.
