Abraham-Louis Perrelet, Swiss born, was a master of his art and his talents. Interested in the watchmaking trades, he devoted himself from his adolescence to the construction of a certain number of precision instruments. Perrelet is known for inventing the automatic self-winding movement. He also was the first person to make the pedometer and to make watches with cylinder, duplex, escapements, date watches, and equation watches. He fine tuned the gear train even further, improving the pinions, wheels, escapement and winding mechanism.
Louis-Frédéric Perrelet inherited his grandfather’s watchmaking genius. As he displayed a liking for mechanics and mathematics, he was educated by his grandfather, before setting up in Paris to study in the Breguet workshops. He quickly showed himself to be an independent watchmaker. In 1815, Perrelet designed astronomical clock which was shown at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1823. This earned him the royal appointment as watch-maker-engineer to three kings of France. At the Exhibition of French Industrial Products, he presented an exceptional fly back counter for physics and astronomy. This instrument, for which a patent was officially granted to him in March 1828, won him the Academy of Sciences medal in 1830.
