Description
Garth Williams (American Artist, 1912-1996). Original Artwork and Other Archive Material Related to the Book, JB's Harmonica, [Here Entitled "JB's Happy Harmonica"] Written by John Sebastian. [N.p., though probably Guanajuato, Mexico, n.d., ca. 1989]. Twelve original preliminary pencil sketches on stiff paper of JB and his father and mother. Approximately 11.5 x 9 inches and smaller. A few are signed by Williams. With fifty-seven original sketches (mostly in pencil, but a few are in blue ink) and studies done for the book, on various papers of various sizes. Also with several sheets of color deconstructions of some images. With a simple mock-up of the book, two copies of the first draft of the script by John Sebastian, and seventeen pages of notes and simple layout sketches, presumably done by Williams. Also with two letters addressed to Williams from two different editors at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich concerning this project. Some sheets with minor wear (as to be expected from working drafts of such material), but archive is generally near fine. This archive is noteworthy, because at this early stage of the story, all of the characters are humans - in the final version (published in 1993, roughly four years after this material was created), they all became bears! From the Estate of Garth Williams.
