Item Details
Description
We are extremely proud to present this next in a large collection of hand painted antique glass 1895-1905 salt / pepper shakers, from such giants as Mt. Washington, Wavecrest, Rodefer, Belle Ware, Keystone Ware, and Handel. Our first example is a traditional Mt. Washington blank, hand painted floral shaker, in a bulbous base called the Little Apple pattern. This shaker features beautiful hand painted flowers, and is in VG+ antique condition, with minor wear, and under cap chips. This exact shaker can be found on Page #128, Vol 2 of Lechner, with the current book on this remarkable shaker being $75+, standing 2 x 2 x 2.25" tall and weighs 2 oz. Research consulted: Wave Crest: The Glass of C.F. Monroe / by Wilfred R. Cohen; Mt. Washington & Pairpoint Glass (Vol. One) / by Kenneth M. Wilson, AND, Mt. Washington & Pairpoint Glass (Vol. Two) / by Kenneth M. Wilson & Jane Shadel Spillman; The World of Salt Shakers Volumes 1 – 3 / by Mildred & Ralph Lechner. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. The Mount Washington Glass Works was founded 1837 in South Boston by Deming Jarves & Edmund Monroe. They maintained a close relationship with Boston & Sandwich Glass until about 1860. Timothy Howe & Wm. Libbey took over Mt. Washington in 1863, and William L. Libbey moved the firm to New Bedford in 1870. A reorganization of the company in 1874 brought Frederick S. Shirley to the firm as the new manager; and, under him, many new types of glass were developed and patented including: Burmese, Peachblow, Lava, Rose Amber, Royal Flemish, and Lusterless Satin glass. Mount Washington became noted for its brilliant cut glass and was awarded a certificate of merit for its exhibit at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876. In 1880, a Britannia works called the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company was erected on land adjacent to the Mount Washington Glass Company. The works were named after its first superintendent, Thomas J. Pairpoint. At the time, Mr. Pairpoint was considered one of the greatest silver designers in both England and America. This new company became one of the largest manufacturers of silver plated ware in the USA. The two companies merged in 1894 and became known as the Pairpoint Corporation. Pairpoint soon became a leader in the glass industry, with specific emphasis placed upon metal / glass combinations such as brides baskets, and ultimately became the most prolific supplier of hand painted, sculpted, and puffy glass pattern electric lamps & fixtures in American history. The Pairpoint lamp influence survived into the dark days of the 1930s Great Depression, only to see the glass & silver departments closed in 1938.
