Description
MCKINLEY WILLIAM: (1843-1901) American President 1897-1901. Assassinated. A.L.S., William McKinley, as President, two pages, 8vo, Washington, 14th July 1900, to Hon. John W. Griggs, on the printed stationery of the Executive Mansion. McKinley announces 'The Hamilton Club wants you very much' and continues 'I do not know your vacation plans, but if it will not wholly damage them, I think your going would be most useful. One of your best speeches on that occasion would go the “country round”. The Club intend to make the speeches of the evening a document for general distribution.' Some very light age wear and, typically of McKinley's letters, with a few minor smudges to the text but not the signature. Accompanied by a small piece from the verso of an envelope (presumably the original) bearing the gold embossed Presidential seal. Together with a dark fountain pen ink signature by Griggs to the upper half of an 8vo sheet (the lower half cut away) of printed stationery from Sussex House, Paterson, New Jersey. With blank integral leaf. Autograph letters of McKinley as President are particularly scarce and desirable. G to VG, 2
