Description
Gorham Solid Sterling Silver 1930s Bowl. Bottom marked Gorham Sterling A12848 and had the elephant date mark used only during the 1930s. The Gorham Manufacturing Company was founded in 1831 by Jabez Gorham, a master craftsman together with Henry L. Webster at Providence, Rhode Island. In 1863, the firm was chartered by the Rhode Island Legislature as the Gorham Manufacturing Company. They later abandoned the coin silver standard (900/1000) and adopted the sterling standard of 925/1000 in the year 1868. During the heyday of American Silver manufacturing , circa 1850 to 1940, Gorham had a strong piece of the market. The White House used Gorham Silver Services for many of the administrations. The bowl measures 8 x 8 x 1.75 and weighs 208 grams - 7.4 oz. *Provenance: Dr. Douglas D. Ashley Estate, Charleston SC
