Description
18th century walnut corner chair, possibly Virginia. Broad D-shaped arm rail with applied low crest and rounded terminal rests, two vasiform splats, turned tapering column supports, square Marlborough legs with inside chamfered edge on each, square stretcher rails flush to outside edge of square stiles. One remaining original brace at a 45 degree angle secured by 18th century rosehead nails. Roman numeral markings on the undersides of some of the apron rails and stretchers. Slip seat appears to have 18th century construction of a hardwood similar to walnut. 28" height. 17 3/8" x 17 1/4" seat with height of 13 3/4". Provenance - descended through a Knoxville, TN family with a Virginia and Tennessee history. Late 18th century.
Condition
Refinished, loss to original height with evidence of having castors in the past, three of the four block supports for the seats have been replaced.
