Item Details
Description
The AEAA is extremely proud to showcase this FIRST of a magnificent collection of antique and vintage hand painted, matched cup and saucer sets from England and Europe. Our initial offering is a magnificent, valuable gilded Cobalt + iron oxide red Polychrome set, potted & hand finished in the Japanese Imari tradition between 1876 and 1889 by the respected firm of T. A. & S. Green in Fenton, Staffordshire, England. This valuable pair feature traditional Ruyi Lappets, stylized Fleur de Lis, and gorgeous lotus blossoms, all finished in classic Victorian precision. T. A. & S. Green china was and is considered some of the truly most ornate and valuable from its era, especially in the Imari tradition. A first cousin to our pair can be seen on Page #315 / Book III of the classic IV volume reference "Collectible Cups & Saucers / by Jim & Susan Harran (published from 1997-2009), and listed between $250 & $250, in excellent condition, as is ours!.......................... The Green family of potters had a distinguished history encompassing 150 years, beginning as Green & Richards, when Thomas Green bought the works at Park Street, Fenton (in the Lane Delph Area) from a Mr. Francis Brode in 1833. In 1834 Thomas was joined in partnership by Mr. W. Richards also of Fenton. In 1847, Richards withdrew from the partnership, leaving Thomas Green to run the Minerva Works from 1847-1859, using the first crown Fenton looped rope mark + T.G. stamp. From 1859-1876, the Minerva Works became the M. Green & Co. avoiding a crown & rope mark. In 1876, the Minerva Works became our T. A. & S. Green, operating 13 years until 1889, once again using the crown & looped rope stamp + T.A. & S.G. In 1889, the Minerva Works was purchased by the Crown Staffordshire Porcelain Company until 1948, then becoming the Crown Staffordshire China Co. Ltd. till 1985. With the growing demand for 'bone china' the company was renamed in 1948, and began to produce only china. In 1965 the Green family's connection with the company ceased, and the company became part of the Wedgwood Group in 1973. Saucer measures 6.5 x 6.5 x 1 and cup 4.25 x 3.25 x 3.25; Weight:12 oz.
