Group of 4 Southwest Baskets and Trays and One California Covered Basket from Hupa
The other Hopi, Apache and Pima.
Measurements (H X D): 3-1/2 x 18-1/2 in. (large tray), 1-1/2 x 14-3/4 in. (medium tray), 7-1/4 x 8 in. (basket with lid), 2-3/4 x 8-3/4 (medium basket), 3-1/2 x 7 in. (small basket)
Provenance: Collected by John Wyer and Martha Summerhayes during the last quarter of the 19th century. The Frederic Remington Museum acquired the collection from Helen Shahda, Johnstown, NY 1972.

The Native American items in the auction were collected bu John Wyer and Martha Summerhayes during the last quarter of the 19th century. Her book, "Vanished Arizona" was written as a reminiscence of her experience traveling in the west with her husband. The Summerhayes traveled to Arizona with other Eighth Infantry officers and their families in the summer of 1874. They continued to travel throughout the Midwest over the next quarter century.

Condition
The large and medium trays both appear to be in excellent condition, with only very minor fading and wear to the bottoms. The basket with lid has a loss to the edge measuring 3-1/2 in. (piece en suite), small breaks to rim, lid in very good condition; the medium basket has five small breaks to the binding at the edge of the rim; the small basket has four breaks extending from the edge of the rim, the largest measuring 1-1/4 in.
