Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $500**

United States, Pennsylvania or New York, ca. 19th century CE. An antique bentwood barrel, likely made by a cooper in the Shaker community. The barrel sides are formed by steaming / boiling the birch until pliable and molded into shape, a steel panel is riveted along the seam to pull the ends together tightly. The wood lid fits flush into a lip just below the rim, with a metal ring loop handle. The simple style and functionality made bentwood boxes popular in the Shaker community, and coopers sold pails, barrels, and other wood containers in and outside their community. The laminate lid is stamped in ink which is too faint to clearly discern. Size: 18.5" Diameter x 23" H (47 cm x 58.4 cm)

Provenance: private Owen collection, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA, acquired from Berman's Auction, New Jersey, USA, early 2000s
