Description
**First Time At Auction**

North America, Southern United States, Central Florida, Withlacoochee River, Oligocene, ca. 38 million years ago. An incredible agatized coral that has developed a coating of druzy crystals over the preserved anatomical structures! This is the first and only piece we have seen with such delicate, free-standing rod-like structures which were from a once living polyp colony. The surfaces are completely lined with intensely sparkling drusy crystals which have such a dramatic shimmer that the surface appears to be coated in diamonds, sugar, or snow! A druzy (also spelled drusy or druse) refers to a coating of fine crystals that forms on a surface, typically the inner cavity of a mineral or a rock. These crystals are usually small, and their collective presence creates a sparkling or glittering effect. Of all the agatized coral examples found in the world, rarely will you ever encounter agatized coral with druzy coated tentacles! Size: 5.75" L x 4" W (14.6 cm x 10.2 cm)

Agatized coral is highly prized not only by fossil collectors but by gem and mineral collectors as well. The majority of agatized coral is either solid inside when sliced or it possesses a relatively unremarkable internal cavity. The combination of preserved tentacles and crystal druzy surface is stunning! Agatized coral of this quality is so rare that usually it is cut up and used in very expensive custom jewelry pieces. As a complete crystal specimen with this amount of anatomical detail is probably worth even more in its natural state.
