Description
NEIL BOYLE. Rare Hors de Commerce Serigraph Embossed Edition of 80. The First Hundred Years, 1986, 17-1/2" x 35" image size (framed size: 28-1/2" x 43") inscribed lower left: HC 79/80 and initialled NB. Also signed in pencil lower right: Boyle. Frame has a little black showing in upper left corner in the joint, has some slight black scuffs on side of frame, has no glass. HC = Hors de Commerce. An impression pulled outside the edition for the personal use of the master printer and the printer-collaborator, if any, or the publisher (the group or individual funding the project. An hors de commerce ("not for trade") proof, created in small numbers to be shown to gallery owners or art dealers.
A serigraph print on paper titled The First Hundred Years by Neil Boyle. The print depicts the faces of immigrants, famous figures who were immigrants, and the Statue of Liberty. There are copper tone names of countries in their native language around the faces of the figures.
Born in Alberta, Canada, Neil Boyle (1931-2006) received formal art training in Alberta at the Banff School of Fine Arts (renamed the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity) and the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles in the 1950s before teaching art for several years at the California Art Institute in Thousand Oaks, California.
Over the next decade, Boyle provided story illustrations for several magazines, including The Saturday Evening Post, Reader’s Digest, Cosmopolitan, and Ladies’ Home Journal.
Boyle also painted calendars for the Rand Corporation which included portraits of notable politicans, athletes, artists, and authors. In addition, the artist painted album covers for musicians such as Glenn Miller, Tennessee Ernie Ford, The Sons of the Pioneers, and Henry Mancini.
Later in life, Boyle returned to teaching at the California Art Institute, and painted many Western subjects in his typical impressionistic style, often signing his name alonside the acronym, BSWCA—Big Shot West Coast Artist.
